Last year my R developed a strange rattle from the gearbox. I took it off the road and had the gearbox overhauled (no faults found except new seals) and the engine stripped and re-built (new camshaft and tappets fitted, otherwise fine).
Finally got it all together again last week and guess what? Yep, rattle still there. Best guess seems to be the flex plate (torque convertor drive plate) is cracked or loose, so have got a replacement coming. Anyone else like to throw a suggestion in the pot whilst I've got the gearbox off- again?
The rattle seems to be rev dependent but is very disturbing in it's volume, ie like loose four inch nails flying around. If the new flex plate doesn't cure it then I'm stumped.

Bit of an update for those who are interested. Removed box and refitted flex plate and torque convertor on their own to engine. Started engine and all quiet.
Convertor and front pump returned to rebuilder for checking. Experts seems stumped too!
Will I make the Annual at this rate?

More news. The rattle would appear to have been caused by loose convertor blades and a replacement convertor has cured it. Running just the convertor on the engine wouldn't give the rattle as there was no oil circulating to rattle the blades! Fortunately the car was back on the road in time to make the Annual and I was very pleased to be able to attend.
